The Science and Treatment of Alcoholism

MEDSCAPE (09/30) – Alcoholism is a multifaceted disease. It can be understood from many different perspectives. In this article, we [present] a clinical case that depict[s] the natural trajectory of alcohol dependence from a neurochemical and psychosocial perspective. A proper conceptualization, and therefore an appropriate treatment approach, requires an understanding of the multiple facets of the illness; namely, how crucial it is that a biopsychosocial approach be implemented with the understanding that management of withdrawal in the detoxification period is just the first step in treatment; and that for relapse prevention, physicians, psychologists, social workers, and therapists from other departments must work hand in hand if meaningful treatment is to occur.
