Recovery houses fill void for addicts

Josh Kromer had been high on crack and awake for three days when he tried heroin for the first time.

“I fell right in love with it easily, just like every other drug I did,” Kromer said.

But then he spent 10 days in a homeless shelter, sicker than he’d ever felt with heroin withdrawal, before he decided to call a crisis center for detox. After he dried out, he moved into Serenity Street, a recovery house on the South Side of Columbus.
