Nation Needs Help to Stop Perils of Addiction

A word that most of us know, a word that carries with it an unbelievable stigma, is “addict.” It’s from Latin, addicere, addictus —to sentence, or become dependent upon.

It usually applies to someone who is apparently hopelessly dependent on some type of substance that appears to convert that individual into something or someone that defies previously accepted mores. Mere mention of the word addict, conjures judgmental images of low-life losers and derelicts, or tattoo-plastered gangsters with wife-beater shirts and shaved heads that generate social upheaval, destitution, criminality, deceit, thievery, illicit activity or other unacceptable and negative behaviors that plague society.
